35 DOST-Funded Technologies now with FTO Report

As part of TAPI’s commitment to successfully empower the technology portfolio of the country, services such as Intellectual Property (IP) Valuation and Freedom to Operate (FTO) have been effectively provided by the Invention Development Division (IDD) to all Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Research and Development Institutes (RDIs) over the past years.

FTO, as a process, determines the likelihood that a technology for commercialization may infringe intellectual property rights (IPR) of other existing technologies on a given territorial domain. It is also an essential tool used by technology transfer personnel in identifying risks of infringing existing patents and justify the valuation and price of its own IP. Such feat is strongly beneficial especially when it comes to obtaining favorable fairness opinions.

Mr. Clifford Glenn D. Malaay, FTO Program Manager, said that the team was able to reach its 2020 target for DOST-Generated Technologies’ FTO reports. With the anticipated extension of its project, IDD’s FTO Team is eyeing to provide FTO services to ten (10) more DOST technologies by July 2020.

TAPI’s FTO services are under the project “Support to the Commercialization of 500 DOST-Generated Technologies and Strengthening the Country’s IP and Technology Portfolios.”
