Herbal Dewormer Composition Against Strongyle Worms of Small Ruminants

HERBAL DEWORMER COMPOSITION AGAINST STRONGYLE WORMS OF SMALL RUMINANTS

Assignee / Owner: Visayas State University (VSU)

Field / Industry: Animal Health

Patent Number / Registration Number: 2-2012-000357

Status of Application: Granted

Brief Description / Features of the Technology:

The technology relates to an oral dose of herbal dewormer composition for small ruminants, such as goats, that can control parasitic infection caused by strongyle worm  (Haemonchus contortus). The composition is a mixture of crude ethanolic extracts (CEEs) of makabuhay (Tinospora rumphii), caimito (Chrysophyllum cainito), and makahiya (Mimosa pudica).

Problem Addressed:

The common farmers’ practice in controlling roundworm infection (Haemonchosis) of goats is through the use of commercial anthelmintic. However, the use of commercial anthelmintic has many disadvantages. These disadvantages include high cost of medicine, unavailability in the local market, development of resistance of the parasite after continuous use, and pollution of the environment because of dewormer residues in animal feces. There is, therefore, a need to tap alternative dewormer such as herbal anthelmintic. “The herbal dewormer is more accessible compared to the the commercially sold drugs since the components of the herbal anthelmintic, the makabuhay (Tinospora rumphii), caimito (Chrysophyllum cainito), and makahiya (Mimosa pudica), are locally and readily available. The use of the herbal dewormer is also more economical compared to commercial anthelmintics.

Advantages

The herbal dewormer may also prevent the resistance of the parasite from the continuous use of commercial dewormer and avoid pollution of the environment.”

Market Potential / Application

The herbal dewormer is a more economical and safer alternative than commericially-available anthelmintics.
